nerdcore
Let’s not forget that PLENTY of definite nerds are assholes. Ask my ex-boyfriend, a D&D playing, Magic the Gathering-loving, Otakon-attending card-carrying NERD who verbally abused me and propositioned my best girl friend in a sleazy hotel room. (She refused, and is still my very best girl friend.)
Nerds can be assholes just like anyone else, women. Saving throws don’t save you from douchebaggery. Programming computers doesn’t mean you’re programmed to be a good boyfriend.
I actually wrote a piece on the fallacy that nerds make the “best” boyfriends. It was originally written for an online magazine but maybe I”ll dust it off and pitch it somewhere else.
First, I cut the content… follow the poster names to follow the conversation.
Second, disclosure upfront: I manage a team of around 40, both female and male nerds.
Third and last but not least: there’s just too much i this whole conversation to… bash.
Nerds are a special kind, read both RandsinRepose Nerd Handbook and his Nerd In a Cave.
Sure these are stereotypes, but as is typical with stereotypes they are based on major observations.
Nerds are sensible. when they think their time to play D&D has come, you MUST give them their space or they might/will snap at you.
Nerds are protective of their own biotope. They might/will snap at you otherwise.
Nerds surely also can be assholes. What would exclude them from this privilege? That they are damn funny?
They aren’t. They’re smart, they’re damn smart and once they come under steam their thoughts and thinking patterns will crush any comparison with how most non-nerds think. But do.not.interrupt.their.flow.
It might not be fucking funny.
Nerds are limited in their social patterns. Limited if you compare them to people you meet at the bar.
But they won’t beat you up. And yes, they can be assholes as well.
Just think back of the history of the internet. Think back of the (former) Usenet and flamewars. Visit nerd boards and admire the exposed hate.
Still they are cute… and I don’t just say that because my g/f is a bigger nerd than I am. ;)
