I think I have a responsibility to [him] as much as to myself, to remain as alive as possible. This is the secret to it all I think. Even if I don’t always stick by that principle it is my feeling that all relationship problems arise when you are not alive, because either you focus on your partner (like a drug) for things they can’t really give, or your life isn’t fertile enough to sustain you when your partner is in a state of suck.

Rather than get lost again, I want to be braver when I start to slip. All things I say to Nick in bed, holding each other something fierce — they’re the stupidest, grandest things that can make you courageous — can give you that life. You can always rage and cry and fuck it back. Or make a commitment to meet fear with fire.
